tea stained gift tags.

i'm a little obsessed with antiquing paper. i've done it for ornaments, framed art, a cowboy wanted poster,
 and now gift tags for christmas.

i love it because it's easy, cheap, and has such a stunning effect.

in the past i've always used coffee, but i'm not a coffee drinker. i'm a tea girl. i was always under the impression that  tea wouldn't work as well - not the case.

first, i typed up the label in word, changing up fonts and text size for fun. i printed them on card stock and punched them out with my mom's "stampin' up" gift tag punch.

then i laid them out on my super gross cookie sheet (we switched to stoneware cookie sheets awhile ago, so i pretty much only use this for staining paper. incase you were worried i actually cooked on that greasy thing.)

i boiled about 3 cups of water with a tea bag (the darkest tea i had was a chai. something like sleepytime might not work as well.) for about 15 minutes to get it concentrated. i attempted the same method i used when antiquing with coffee (pouring it all over the paper on the cookie sheet), but the stain was so dark i couldn't read the tag.

i tried to water down the tea, thinking i had boiled it to long, but it still came out too dark.  3rd time's a charm - i dipped the tags in the tea and laid them out on the cookie sheet. perfecto.

you know they're done when the tags start to pull away from the cookie sheet. click here for a visual.

sorry this is a little blurry.
i absolutely love adding personal touches to homemade gifts! i also contemplated gluing the paper to fabric after i stained it to add a layer of texture, but didn't have any fabric on hand that looked right. these would also look neat with torn edges! the possibilities are endless!

fridge magnet christmas tree.

i'm back in the land of the living! first trimester is over and i'm pretty much functioning like a normal person again :-) SUCH a good feeling! for anyone interested, the accupuncture and magnesium pills saved me - for anyone that deals with Hyperemesis Gravidarum {aka extreme, extreme "morning" sickness}, i beg you to try these 2 things out! i was better several weeks sooner this time than last time!

ok, now onto my reason for posting!

i'm having a blast making emery a part of christmas this year - she's been having so much fun with all the decorating and DiY projects going on at our house right now! this fridge magnet christmas tree is right up her toddler alley...

if you missed it, the tutorial is pretty much the same as the fall magnet tree
  • i taped green paper on the fridge, free-handed the tree shape, and cut it out.
  • printed off ornament and star clipart on cardstock and cut them out.
  • and laminated it all for 25 cents a foot at Mardel. easy peasy.
{while i was sick on the couch,
emery developed an obsession with being naked.
i hear this is normal, but i don't how she
isn't freezing!}
this is perfect for her to play with while i'm cooking dinner or cleaning the kitchen, especially because the ornaments on our real tree are no-nos :-)

what are some fun ways you make christmas decor kid-friendly??

love and happy toddlers,
amber.

photo thank you cards.

what better way to finish the sporadic birthday series than with thank you cards? i love to do photo cards because they're cheaper, less likely to get thrown away {fridge, anyone?}, and more personal. i do believe the final product was my plan E, but it all worked out in the end.

creative idea #14: photo thank you cards
idea sparked by: blog.alainmartinez.com {very last pic}

tools:

  • scrapbook paper {9 pieces of 8x11}
  • card stock {9 pieces of 8x11}
  • ruler
  • pencil
  • scissors
  • tape
  • something to string banner with {optional}
  • hot glue gun (optional)
  • computer + printer
  • something round to trace circles around letters {optional. i used a bowl}
  • camera
  • baby
  • props {optional}
  • avery 5164 labels {optional}
  • post card stamps
directions:
  • to make a banner triangle the full size of an 8x11 piece of paper, use a ruler to mark the center of the bottom of the piece of scrapbook paper. trace one line from that point to each of the top corners, to make a triangle. repeat with all scrapbook paper.
  • on the computer, type out THANK YOU! in desired font and color, sized to fit your triangles. print on cardstock
  • either cut them out right on the letter, or use a round object to trace a circle around them. {i put the circle on the paper and held it up to the light to make sure the letter was centered before tracing}. cut out.
  • tape the letters to the triangles
  • i was originally going to do this outside and have the banner hot glued on to lace ribbon and hanging from 2 chairs, but i needed to get these done quick so i taped them to the wall instead{no trip to the park necessary}. you choose your plan of attack.
  • photograph your adorable subject with desired props.

  • edit and print photos.
  • because my hand writing isn't the best and i thought it would be fun, i printed out individual thank yous from emery in kid font. i let each person know what emery loved to do with their gift! i printed these on the avery 5164 labels and stuck them on the back of the photo.

what are your favorite thank you card ideas??

love and gratitude,
amber.

the first post ever - loaded orange chocolate bites.

so, i've always wanted to have a blog but had the illusion that every blogger is completely original and comes up with all their ideas on their own. clearly i don't read blogs very often. thanks to pinterest, i quickly realized plenty of bloggers copy other people’s ideas, tweak them to fit their preferences, and simply give the original poster credit. Now that, I can do.

So here we go: my not-so-original creations, with full credit to the idea sparker. hopefully these projects will spark some ideas for you! (if they do, please share, i would be sooo excited to see what you’ve made!)

creative idea #1: loaded orange chocolate bites
idea sparked by: Hershey

I started making these in high school after eating a delicious Hershey chocolate bar. I don’t remember what exactly was in theirs, but after a failed attempt and a few tweaks over the years, this is how my version’s ended up –

{Super important side note – this makes a zillion chocolates. I make them to give out for Christmas presents and actually, this year, i doubled the recipe. so clearly, if you’re making them just for you, don’t buy in bulk. or maybe you should. they’re addictive…}

ingredients:
  • 2.5 lbs Ghirardelli Candy Making and Dipping Bar {I get this at Sam’s Club}
  •      13.5 oz Dried Fruit Mix, sorted into separate bowls {I get Peterson Farms Cherry Berry Blend (blueberries, cranberries, and cherries) Also from Sam’s Club.}
  •       4 oz Almonds, ground in food processor {or smashed with meat tenderizer}
  •       Orange Extract

Tools:

  •      1+ mini muffin trays
  •      wooden Spoon
  •      metal Spoon
  •      medium pot
  •      butter knife
  •      ½ tsp measuring spoon

Directions:

  •      Cut chocolate bar into small pieces.

{I chop the chocolate and store it in a ziplock because
I make these in batches throughout the month}

  • If you want to do it the right way, melt your chocolate like this. if not, just stick it in the pot on low, stirring frequently. {I’ve never had any problems melting it this way when using Ghirardelli}

  • When melted, add Orange extract in ½ tsp increments, tasting to find desired intensity. If too strong, add more chocolate.{darn.}

  •      Bring chocolate to work station. Fill each ungreased muffin tin with a small amount of chocolate {I do 1/3-1/2 spoonful, depending on size of spoon. it’s better if it’s not too thick.}

{My station.}
{random info - i was out of the normal fruit mix and
almonds, so i improvised for the pics. There are
golden raisins and cashews in this batch}

  •      Gently wiggle muffin tray to spread the chocolate evenly. You want the whole base of each tin to be covered.

{Also, I have 2 mini muffin trays I use, but I only fill one at a time with chocolate. Once I tried to fill them both before adding the fruit and nuts but the chocolate in the second tray hardened by the time I got to it. I recommend just filling one tray at a time.}

  •      Working quickly, add one cranberry, one cherry, and one blueberry to each cup. Then sprinkle with almond crumbs.

  •      Gently press fruit and nuts into chocolate to make sure they’ll stick. {When I don’t do this, I have a lot of almond crumbs fall off when removing them from the tins.}

  •      Place tray in fridge or freezer for 10ish minutes, or until hard. Gently remove from tins with a butter knife. I prefer to store these in the fridge, but they can be kept out at room temp also.

{tied up and ready to hand out for Christmas!}

  • Need your pot for something else, but it's still full of chocolate you haven't finished making? Pour your chocolate into paper muffin cups, and let it harden in fridge or freezer. Peel paper off and add to the rest of your chocolate stash to remelt later!

Questions or comments? i'd love to hear them!
